Little Things That Make a Big Difference The word "eko" in ekobaby reflects the all-natural core of our baby food, with the letter "k" conveying our founder Jenny's Swedish background: "ekologisk" means organic in Swedish. At Jenny’s ekobaby, we are dedicated to making an excellent product, while constantly examining how we conduct our business so that it is done in a socially and environmentally responsible way. That means...
Natural and pesticide-free ingredients Like you, we want our children to avoid ingesting pesticides, so using organic ingredients whenever possible seems, well, natural. But it’s about more than just intuition. That intuitive notion is supported by research. For instance, a 2005 public health study concluded that pesticide levels were indeed high in children not eating pesticide-free diets, but that, encouragingly, when the children switched -- even for a few days’ time -- to an organic diet, the pesticide levels in their urine practically disappeared (see footnote 1 below).
Many parents are choosing natural and pesticide-free foods for their families. The organic food market is growing steadily in the U.S. and during the period 2001 through 2005, sales of organic baby food rose 57% (see footnote 2 below). We will be seeking organic certification in spring 2007.
Our Food Sources Although the growing season here in the northeast is relatively short, we buy our produce from locally grown sources whenever we can.
Our Packaging We made sure to develop packaging that is safe, convenient, minimal and environmentally sound. Each reclosable, poly-lined paper bag contains several individually frozen portions. As you use up the portions, the bag takes up less and less freezer space. In the end, very little packaging remains to be thrown away. Please check to see if your neighborhood recycling program accepts poly-lined paper.
Our Labels We have deliberately chosen not to use vinyl package labels on our bags. We use Teslin, a waterproof, synthetic paper product. PVC (poly vinyl chloride) poses health hazards during its manufacturing process because it releases dioxin, a plastic toxin known to disrupt reproductive systems (see footnote 3 below). Our labels are printed by Red Sun Press, a local worker-owned printing and graphic design company dedicated to social justice. Look for the union “bug” on our labels, the tiny mark that means our labels were printed by workers protected by a collective bargaining agreement. "Workers in union shops participate in negotiating wages, benefits and workplace health and safety policies" (fromwww.redsunpress.com )
Composting To further reduce waste during our production process, we compost all our vegetable and fruit peels.
